Moving or Lifting a Building?

Here is how you get started.

Here are steps to follow if you want to move/lift your building:

GIVE OUR COMPANY A CALL OR SEND US AN EMAIL!
  • We have been moving and lifting buildings over 30 years and are familiar with many municipal requirements.  Moving a building out of a municipality is different than moving a building into a municipality and knowing who to talk to and what information to ask for can either help or hinder your fact gathering process.  Sometimes you only need to talk to the Roads Supervisor, other times you should talk to the Building Inspector, it all depends on the nature of your project.  We can help you figure out how to proceed.
Check the municipal code (this generally only applies to building moving, not lifting):
  • Most municipalities have their code (ordinances) on their website.  Check their code for building moving regulations (many do not have any.)  Some municipalities may require special permits, bonds, or that you request the move at a public meeting, etc.  Get the requirements in writing.
  • Make sure you can move the building/house to your lot if it is in a subdivision (especially if it has an HOA.)
  • Give any information from the municipality to Badger Contracting Inc. Certain municipal requirements may affect the estimate you receive. For example, some may require high amount bonds or excessive insurance requirements that some movers may not be able to obtain.
  • Secure a general contractor or determine if you are doing this yourself. Often, people use general contractors to help them coordinate the project and ensure its completion because such projects are complex and involve many subcontractors (excavators, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, etc. to name a few.) Unless specified, movers will only be able to ensure the movement of the building. If you decide to go with one or do this yourself, be sure to let Badger Contracting Inc know.
After you have determined you can move the building to your property, call or send us an email.  We are going to ask for the information below in order to give you a preliminary estimate.  This information also applies if you are lifting your building.  We can also email you a questionaire that helps us obtain the information we need.
  • Detailed description of what you’d like done with timeline, addresses, etc. at a minimum;
  • Sketch of current building and foundation with dimensions;
  • Photos of outside of the building on all four sides and foundation on the inside, if possible;
  • Information learned from the municipality (above); and
  • Contact information for general contractor (optional)
Above all - research your mover!  Take the time to look at the mover’s past projects and talk to past customers.  Ask the mover for references, especially from other businesses.  Importantly, always be sure any building mover has liability and Workman's Compensation insurance - some may not!  Feel free to call the mover’s insurance company to verify this information.
SPECIAL NOTE:  Badger Contracting Inc can provide references upon request and has liability and auto insurance in amounts that exceed the state requirements, as well as Workman's Compensation.  *In addition, Badger Contracting Inc provides additional insurance coverage to protect the building that covers far beyond what general liability or riggers insurance covers.  This unique policy is designed specifically for building moving, lifting, and shoring and is labeled "cargo insurance."

*The more specific the information you provide, the more accurate and timely a preliminary estimate can be provided.
**A preliminary estimate is similar to a "concept quote". It is based on the initial information that you provide to Badger Contracting Inc and is subject to change as we learn more about your project. All projects have unique requirements that Badger Contracting Inc factors into the final cost of your project.
